Visualizing Japan Tourist Data

Japan's Roller Coaster of Tourism Rates

Japan

Welcome back to Japan Visualizer

This week I’ve gathered data about the tourism industry in Japan. Specifically, the number of tourists entering the country, where they are from, and which months are the most and least busy. All data today comes from the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Total Amount of Tourists

The drop in 2020 is attention grabbing but we all know why that happened. Some other drops are in 2009 which was caused by the 2008 Great Financial Crisis and in 2011 due to the Tohoku natural disasters and the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The massive growth after 2012 was due to the Japanese government lifting visa requirements for certain countries (mostly other Asian countries)

Where Are The Tourists From?

Graph from the JNTO

So where are all the tourists from? Over a quarter come from South Korea. A little more than a quarter taken up by China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and a little under a quarter is taken up by the remaining Asian countries. Over 75% of tourists come from other Asian countries. This isn’t surprising as most these countries do not require a visa to visit while also being close. The remaining quarter is taken up by all of North America and Europe. Chart is from JNTO because the chart is too good not to use.

The Most And Least Busy Months

Surprisingly, cherry blossom season (late March to early April) is not the busiest month for tourism in Japan. July was the busiest month for a majority of the last 28 years and it’s not even close being the busiest 18 times. This is the peak of Summer for Japan and many other countries. The winter months are defiantly the least visited months. This falls in line with a general trend of fewer people traveling during those months.

All data has been obtained from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). JNTO is a government organization offering public data.
